Honoring June McMurty Smith

June M. Smith passed away on September 24, 2019 at age 90.  June and her twin Jean were numbers 12 and 13 of the 14 children of Everett Garrett McMurtry and Susan Dorris McMurtry of Greenbrier, TN.  Her twin introduced June to the love of her life, Flavious Joseph Smith, who proposed on their third straight date. They married a year and a half later on the televised Bride and Groom Show in 1954 and walked hand in hand through the next 65 years together.

Much of their marriage was spent in Cookeville, TN where Flavious was Chairman of the Department of Health and Physical Education at TTU for 36 years.  That is where they raised their 3 children:  Rene (Dave) Richardson, Flavious Jr. (Melanie) Smith, and Brad (Jill) Smith.  June was active in choir and their Sunday School class at First United Methodist Church and more recently at Brentwood United Methodist Church in the Altar Guild.  She was an officer and active member of the Tech Faculty Women’s Club, Town and Gown, and a member of the DAR Travellers Rest Chapter. She was named Most Outstanding Director of the Cookeville Junior Miss Program and secured college scholarships for high school senior girls during her 10 years directing the program. She was sought out to teach etiquette classes and stressed being true to yourself.  Family was extremely important to June, and she hosted annual large reunions after Christmas for many years.  Her home became the shower house since she extended her hospitality to family and friends for bridal and baby showers, teas and cookie exchanges throughout the years.

June and Flavious moved to Brentwood, TN and June enjoyed being GranJune to Hulsey (Ahrev) Smith, Peyton Smith, Tate Richardson, Ellery (Chris Babcock) Richardson, Meredith Richardson, Kenan Smith, twins Joel and Micah Smith, and twins Isaac and Asher Smith.

June will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, cherished friend, mentor to young ladies, consummate southern lady dressed to the nines complete with heels, ever the hostess and giver of wisdom who touched the hearts of many, and one who cherished taking pictures of every moment being sure to get double prints.

There will be a visitation at Brentwood United Methodist Church, 309 Franklin Rd. on Saturday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m.  A Memorial Service will be held immediately following at 11:00 a.m.  A private family graveside committal will follow at Crest Lawn Cemetery in Cookeville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brentwood United Methodist Church or the Travellers Rest DAR Chapter, 8128 Suzanne Dr. Brentwood, TN  37027.
