Honoring Lanell Coile

Lanell Harwell Coile passed away on September 8, 2019.  Born in Atmore, Alabama.  Mrs. Coile was a graduate of Alabama College (University of Montevallo).  Upon completing her degree in Bachelor of Arts in English, Mrs. Coile accepted a job with the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tennessee.  It was at the Baptist Sunday School Board where she met her husband, Walter James (Jim) Coile.  Lanell and Jim married on April 2nd, 1960 at Nashville First Baptist Church, becoming active members and establishing many lifelong friendships.

In 1972, the couple left Nashville with their two young sons (Scott & Stuart), and moved to Walterboro, South Carolina to pursue a new job opportunity.  They remained in South Carolina until the fall of 1974, introducing the final member of their young family while in South Carolina…a beautiful baby girl (Sarah).  The Coile family moved back to middle Tennessee (Franklin) and set up permanent roots.  While Jim returned to the Baptist Sunday School Board’s Architecture Department, Lanell devoted much of her time raising their three young children…organizing countless birthday parties, sleepovers, driving to piano recitals, sports events as well as volunteering at her children’s schools. As her children grew older, she resumed a career in public relations and publishing at Belmont College and later, the YWCA.  She concluded her career assisting her husband and son’s business.  Mrs. Coile was a member of Nashville First Baptist Church Nashville for more than fifty years, served on many committees and taught Sunday School for many years.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother “Meme”, sister, cousin, aunt and devoted friend.  Mrs. Coile is preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents, Mack Travis Harwell and Ouida Sellers Harwell; and brother-in-law, Jerre Johnson.  Mrs. Coile is survived by children Scott (Sandra) Coile, Stuart (Krissy) Coile, Sarah (John) Galloway; grandchildren, Ellie, Miles, Murphy & Mack Coile; James, Will and Chandler Galloway. She is also survived by brother, Kent (Kaye) Harwell of Montgomery, AL; sisters, Sharon (Gary) Trimble of Decatur, AL and Vicki Johnson of Georgiana, AL; and countless extended family and lifelong friends.

Dr. Frank Lewis will conduct a celebration of life service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14 at Nashville First Baptist Church; with visitation one hour prior to service.  Memorial contributions may be made to Nashville First Baptist Church, 108 7th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203-3989; or The American Diabetes Association, 220 Great Circle Road, Nashville, TN 37228.
