Honoring Roberta Daws

Roberta Daws, age 85, ended her battle with Alzheimer’s and passed peacefully on February 10, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Wade and Elizabeth Cannoy and her dear brother, Ralph. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Joe Daws and their children Debbie (Steve) Garris and Doug (Patti) Daws and grandchildren Nicole (Jeff) Warren, Joseph (Rebekah) Daws, Logan Garris, and Caroline Daws.

Roberta was born in Winchester, KY and raised in nearby Frenchburg where she made lifelong friendships which she cherished. She attended and graduated from Asbury College in Wilmore KY. Roberta was awarded a Carnegie Fellowship to Peabody College where she earned a Master’s Degree. She taught in Nashville Public Schools from 1957 to 1989 teaching English, American Literature, and debate. During most of that time, she taught at Overton High School where she developed thousands of students and, as a debate coach, traveled with her teams to local and national tournaments. Both she and her teams received numerous awards and recognition. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1984, Faulkner Fellow by University of MS in 1985, and ‘Key Coach’ by Emory University. She was a member of The National Council of Teachers of English and the Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma educational organization. After retiring from Metro Schools, she taught for 6 years in the English and Language department of Belmont University and then 5 more years as a coordinator in the Peabody / Vanderbilt Master’s Degree in Teaching Program until her final retirement in 2000. She was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church from 1957- 2012 and was an active leader in the United Methodist Women, visiting, serving food, and supporting worship programs. She also served a term on the Pastor – Parish committee. Roberta is fondly remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and wonderful friend to so many. She loved learning, writing poetry, traveling, sharing pictures, meeting new people, and telling stories. Roberta never met a stranger.

Funeral Service will be held at Brentwood United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation prior to the service beginning at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in Frenchburg, KY. Memorial contributions may be made to Brentwood United Methodist Church, 309 Franklin Rd., Brentwood, TN 37027 or Asbury University, 1 Macklem Drive, Wilmore, KY 40390.
