Honoring Wilborn Strode, M.D.

Wilborn D. Strode passed away on January 17, 2020. He was born in Barren County, KY, son of Hughie Denton and Myrtle Whitlow Strode. As a young boy, he worked on the family farm, and as a high school student at Temple Hill, he also worked at a gas station, lumber mill and then in hardware sales. He entered the US Navy at age 18, serving his country from 1943-1946 as a hospital corpsman.  Those experiences led him to pursue a career in medicine.  He received his Bachelor’s degree in 1950 from Western Kentucky University and medical degree in 1958 from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Strode married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Williams while attending medical school. They moved to Nashville in 1958 where he began his medical career in obstetrics which spanned over 40 years. Dr. Strode delivered babies at both St. Thomas and Baptist Hospitals once delivering 10 babies in one night!

His favorite pastimes were travel and his rose garden. His roses graced countless patient rooms, hospital nursing stations and friends’ homes. His travels took him across America and beyond to 85 countries and provinces around the world. He visited every continent and major land mass including both the North and South Poles, with many of those trips also being enjoyed with his family.

Dr. Strode had been a member of Nashville First Baptist Church since 1958. During those years he served on various committees and as a deacon for life. He also served as President of the Nashville and Middle Tennessee OBGYN Society, was a member of the American College of OBGYN, the American Medical Association and TN OBGYN.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Strode is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Williams Strode, and brother, William Strode and a grandson, John McCoy. He is survived by his daughters, Martha Strode, Sarah (Mark) McCoy and Nancy (Craig) Comish; grandchildren, Rachael McCoy, Rebecca McCoy, Harrison Comish and Jonathan Comish; great grandchildren, Luke and Levi McCoy; his sisters, Mary Benson and Billie Swisher and his brother, Fendall Strode.

To honor his life, Dr. Frank Lewis will conduct a service February 1, 2020 at 1 pm at Nashville First Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 11 am. Graveside service held at 3 pm, Woodlawn Memorial Park, Thompson Lane, Nashville.
