Honoring Wayne Baker

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that the family of Wayne Baker announces his passing. On Sunday February 3, 2019, after a courageous battle with illness, Wayne Baker passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 66. Wayne will be remembered by his loving wife of 30 years, Jan and their beautiful daughter Brooke. Wayne will also be remembered by his daughter Kristin (Brian) and their children Emma and Ben, his brothers H.B. (Karen), Jeff (Laura), Gary (Lisa), his sister Debbi, sister-in-law Mary, brother-in-law’s Kevin and Howard as well as many nephews and nieces. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents Horner and Jean Baker.

A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Wayne grew up playing football and baseball. He was a member of the Little Creek All Star baseball team in 1963. In high school he was a member of Lake Taylor High School’s first surfing club. He loved motor cross racing, long distance running, golf and playing the guitar. Wayne had many successful careers that included car sales and furniture buyer, but his favorite career that lasted over 24 years, was with Wyndham as a trainer/recruiter. Of all his successes, nothing compares to his love of being a husband and father. It was that love that put a twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes.

A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held on Saturday, February 9th at Brentwood Baptist Church in Baskin Chapel. Visitation will begin at 1pm and a Celebration of Life ceremony will take place at 2pm.  Interment will take place back in Wayne’s hometown of Norfolk, Virginia at a later date.

The family would like to thank Dr. James McDonald, Dr. Robert Piana, Dr. Barbara Murphy, Dr. Stephanie Norfolk, and the amazing staff at VUMC for their care.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “For the Love of Wayne” GoFundMe page for his daughter Brooke’s college fund.
